WHAT
to EXPECT
A superwet solution is injected into the fat that is to beremoved
and after 10-15 minutes the fat is removed with a strong suction
machine through a cannula (hollow metal tubes). The area suctioned
will feel swollen and very tender (muscle soreness). Most
patients rate pain a 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. Bruising
will be present for one to three weeks or longer. Swelling
will subside over eight to twelve weeks.
ANESTHESIA
- General
DURATION
of OPERATION - Varies depending upon the area to
be suctioned
DAY
of SURGERY - At the end of the procedure you will
be placed in a girdle that covers the treated area. Following
surgery, you will go to the recovery unit for one hour, followed
by 2-4 hours in the post-op recovery . You must have someone
to drive you home and stay with you the first night. Fluids
only (7-UP, Sprite, etc) the first night will reduce chances
of nausea.
DAY
TWO and THREE - Limit activities but it is important
to walk around the room several times per day (4-6). Going
to the bathroom counts as 1. Increase walking on the third
day. You will be seen by Dr. Clement between day two and four.
BACK
TO WORK - Seven to ten days is usual but site will
still be sore. Wear the girdle for two to three weeks.
EXERCISE
- Walk 1/4 - 1/2 mile at 12 to 14 days. From 14 to 30 days
you should slowly increase activities and resume full activites
after week four.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RISKS
BLEEDING - You will have some bloody discharge
from suction sites. If it is heavy, put a sanitary napkin
over the site (under the girdle).
INFECTION
- Uncommon. We use antibiotics pre- and post- operatively.
SCARRING
- The incision sites are usually 1cm. long and can thicken.
SKIN
PROBLEMS - If the skin has enough elasticity it will
contour to a new shape easily. If your skin is loose it will
not contour as well and you may have unevenness in the skin.
PULMONARY
EMBOLISM - Blood clots to lungs. Walking early and
often reduces isks.
CELLULITE
- Suction will not change cellulite significantly.
DEATH
- The risk is extremely small.
SYMMETRY
- You are not symmetrical now and will not be perfectly symmetrical
after the surgery. Look very closely in the mirror prior to
surgery to identify asymmetry.
DEPRESSED
AREA - If there is infection or too much fat is removed,
there can be a depression in the skin. You may have a period
of mild depression after surgery. This is caused by the stress
of the surgery and anesthesia. It will pass as you recover.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT LIPOSUCTION WILL DO
- It
will decrease fullness in the area treated.
- It
can contour the body better than any other procedure.
- The
treated site will not gain as fast as it did before treatment.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT LIPOSUCTION WILL NOT DO
- It
is not a weight reduction procedure.
- It
will not prevent you from gaining weight after the procedure.
- It
will not make you get fat in other areas. You will probably
gain weight all over the body at approximately the same
rate
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT
IF REVISIONS ARE NEEDED
You are
responsible for anesthesia and facility charges.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW LONG WILL RESULTS LAST
If you
continue to exercise and eat a reasonable diet the weight
reduction and contour improvement should last for years. You
can regain the weight if you do not maintain a healthy life
style.
